Affordable Adult Beginner Piano Lessons
My Musical Background

Born into a family of musicians, I received lessons from my parents beginning in my toddler years through to age 9. My father played many instruments including piano, organ, saxophone, harmonica and more. Mom played the organ, drums, and tambourine. Throughout my life I almost always had a piano in the house but mostly they would collect dust.

In 2021 I heard a song on YouTube which I really loved and wanted to learn. The song was beyond my level so I began piano lessons again at the age of 46. Eventually I took my portable piano to the streets of New Westminster as well as became a busker for Translink! Passersby often ask if I teach piano, so I've decided to offer beginner lessons.

Requirements
Have a piano or digital piano at home.

Ideally your digital piano will have ‘weighted keys’ to imitate the feel of a real piano and be touch-sensitive so it can play quietly or loudly depending on how hard you strike the key. It should also have 88 notes. (The standard number of notes for any regular piano worldwide). Many keyboards have less than 88 keys and this is not optimal but still sufficient for first year lessons. Please also purchase an adjustable piano stool if possible (important for proper playing technique and posture). If you don’t want to spend too much money right away, Facebook Marketplace is a great place to look for used keyboards and piano stools. Don’t worry, we can make do without the proper equipment and books but eventually, it would be useful to invest in music books, an appropriate piano and a bench.
Frequently Asked Questions
Thanks for inquiring about lessons with Melody! If you're interested in learning how to play piano then you probably have plenty of questions. Let’s dive right in!
I'm an adult with no experience. Can I still learn how to play the piano?
Are you interested in playing piano? Then yes you can !
Adults can absolutely learn to play the piano. It is true that our brains are more quick to learn new skills when we are young but as adults we have more maturity which lends itself to regular practice.
I hated piano as a kid. Will I enjoy it now?
Some of us have a history of being forced to learn an instrument and we may have had negative experiences with lessons as children. The good thing is that as adults we can try again and have the power to select our own teacher who we feel comfortable with. My lessons are pay as you go so there is no commitment needed from you. If you are not feeling like we are a match, I wont take that personally and you wont be locked into any pre-booked lessons. I'll be honest with you; learning how to play the piano is challenging and requires diligent practice. It can be frustrating as well. Now that you're an adult, you're better equipped to manage that frustration and you can set up your own reward system that works for you. Plus, now you're not being told to play; you want to play! Playing the piano is fun and definitely enjoyable but its also hard work!

How can I prepare for my piano lesson?
Our brains learn best when we are well rested and nourished. Aim to arrive at your piano lesson rested with about a half-full stomach. If you are too full or too hungry it may be hard to focus. It's common and understandable that we often rush around from one thing to the next in the course of our day. If possible, try to relax just a little shortly before your lesson. It's helpful to arrive a bit early and give yourself breathing space. Your brain will appreciate the chance to switch gears and settle in for some new information! So take a few breaths, grab a bottle of water and let the past melt away before your lesson:)
