My Story

It's all in the name!
My father played many instruments such as piano, organ, saxophone, harmonica and more. Mom played the organ, drums, and tambourine. I received lessons as a child from my parents and other piano teachers. Throughout my life I almost always had a piano in the house but mostly it collected dust. I couldn’t stay away from piano completely though and went through phases where I played the songs I learned in my youth as well as learned a few new songs. There were several times I was ready to sell my piano, but I didn’t, and I am so thankful now!

In the year 2020, after 2 decades away from the piano, I heard a song on YouTube which I loved so much I decided I just had to learn it. It was a very difficult song and I quickly realized I would need lessons in order to master it. In 2021 I began formal lessons at New West Music. I accomplished my goal of learning the song I was crazy about and felt so comfortable with my teacher that I pursued learning new songs as well as worked on my technical and my sight reading skills! Contact my piano teacher Konstantin Klimov here for lessons and performances.
In the summer of 2021, I purchased a portable digital piano so that I could take it to the streets and offer the public a community piano to play. I thought that people would enjoy stopping by my piano to play a few tunes and they did, but also (much to my surprise), people enjoyed hearing me play. My “community piano” idea somehow morphed into me playing my piano on the streets of New Westminster and later landing a successful audition for the Translink Busker program (playing on Skytrain property). View my profile here.
Unexpectedly, I found that playing the piano really helped me heal from my depression.
I had something to keep my mind occupied, something to feel good about
and of course the music itself was healing.
I decided to combine my passion for piano with another life long passion;

Reducing Mental Health Stigma
I struggled with depression and anxiety my whole life and found some relief along the way when I came across inspirational stories about mental health recovery on the internet. Now that I have overcome so much suffering, I want to be the one to inspire others.
I created a sign saying that anyone could talk to me about mental health and it sits in front of my piano when I play on the streets . It’s been a great success! People are constantly stopping by to chat with me about mental health. They tell me about their suffering, their triumphs or just say thanks for raising awareness. I am so proud to be a part of normalizing mental health struggles. There is no greater gift than someone saying that they feel a bit better after chatting with me.
My dream is to publish the stories people tell me so that those suffering from depression and anxiety will feel uplifted and not so alone.
I'm accepting stories now.
Find out how returning to the piano lead me to England where I met the famous
Dr.K Boogie Woogie (AKA Brendan Kavanagh)
at the Elton John piano in St.Pancras Train Station.
